STICKY: Ubersimple Ubuntu Installer Script!

EDIT: There's a newer blog post with Ubuntu instructions here:
http://luisgmarine.blogspot.com/2008/03/how-to-install-songb...

Having issues making Songbird get up and go under Linux? And didn't you choose Ubuntu because it was supposed to make all that Linux mess easier?

Well, today is your lucky day, friend.

Those wild feline hackers over at Psychocats have put together a very simple script that will wget the 0.2.5 for your proper architecture and install it into your launcher menu:

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/songbird

Go give it a try, and then tell them how much you love them!

ps: Unfortunately it's not quite so complicated as to check to make sure your GStreamer is properly installed and configured, but if you have problems with playback you can check our documentation, here:

I tried it, and i couldnt get the script to execute...

They should really add it to the Ubuntu official repo's. especially the 64bit version ;)

Superkoop Says:

The 64bit version is really no different than the 32bit version, AFAIK. Since Songbird isn't modified to be 64bit.

As far as the script not working, I have no idea.
But the way I installed it was just downloading from here, and then putting it in my /home folder. And putting launchers where I want them.

Foster Grant Says:

That script installed Songbird into my /tmp directory (due to the

cd /tmp

command in the script) and put an alias in /usr/bin/ pointing to a directory that didn't exist. I had to use root access to delete the alias and move the Songbird directory tree into /usr/bin/. That problem could probably be alleviated by changing

mv Songbird /usr/local/bin/songbird

to

mv Songbird /usr/bin/songbird

in the script, because Gutsy Gibbon doesn't have the /usr/local/ directory.

Also, the first line of the script contains an error that kills the script. Instead of

#!/bin/bash (-)

the first line of the script should read

#!/bin/bash

without the parenthetical hyphen, which bash interprets as a directory name. When it can't find that directory, it stops executing and returns an error to the command line.

this also works with gOS 2.0 betas
