Minimize to Tray extension

Hi,

I just did a quick hack to the Minimize to Tray Firefox extension to use it with Songbird, you can download it here.

I'm sorry but it only works on Windows just like the original extension.

Drop any comment or suggestion here.

Before I forget I want to give full credit to the Minimize to Tray developers (http://minimizetotray.mozdev.org/).

I only changed some lines of code from their wonderful extension.

This is brilliant - just what I was looking for!

mig Says:

Very nice!

All these people making extensions and we don't even have our extensions site up, yet.

Wow!

jkoshi Says:

Awesome!!! Works like a charm ;) All we need now is a menu when you click songbird in the systray...

PauTo Says:

@the-faun: Thanks! :)

@mig: I'm eagerly waiting for the extension page to be available. Extensions will be one of the Songbird's killer features, just like in Firefox.

@jkoshi: Actually, it has a popup-menu when you right-click on the tray icon, if you don't see it may be a bug on the extension. Can you please try the original extension on Firefox or Thunderbird and tell me if you can open the right-click menu? Thanks.

Photon Says:

Hey PauTo!

Great work, now I can finally minimize Songbird to the Tray like Winamp. What about translating the extension to other languages? I could make the Russian and the German translation. But since I'm no programmer, I don't really know how to do this. I think that mainwinOverlay.xul should be edited and a new file with the translations should be created. Am I right? :)

Огромное спасибо!!!
Тhank you!!!

james-san Says:

We really need to make a cross-platform minimise-to-tray, don't we...
I'll have a look at how difficult it will be

I got a site that is converting firefox ext. maybe I can see what I can do but I can't do much because I use windows. I used to use ubuntu but of school I had to go with windows. my site is http://songbird.wmpro.info
I made some modifications of excisting firefox ext and porting them to songbird. heh I made a modifcation of fasterfox and called it fasterbird

spacefish Says:

Any chance this could be adapted to show the icon in the tray INSTEAD of the taskbar WHILE the miniplayer is active? Having a menu option to show miniplayer in addition to the full window would also be good. Assuming Songbird comes out with an Always On Top feature for the miniplayer, my ideal setup is miniplayer + tray icon, just like Winamp.

Thanks for this, though! Works great. :)

PauTo Says:

I was a little bit jealous about the Growl notifications for Mac so I updated the extension to show notifications when is at the tray.

Also the extension is fully localizable now, so if you create a translation just post it there and I'll add it in the next version.

You can download the new version at http://www.menjatallarins.com/extensions/minimize_to_tray_SB...

joshua Says:

I'm a pretty big fan of the extension, but I'm wondering if you could add a feature.

I'd love to be able to move my mouse over the icon in my taskbar and have the track information pop up. You know, so I don't have to fully open the program again to see what's playing.

Possible?

mighty_winny Says:

Great extension. Thanks a lot.
But I got the same request than joshua. Please, is it possible to obtain track info (artist - title) in a pop up when passing over the egg in the systray.

Photon Says:

I've translated it to German but when I wanted to test it and packed the translation into the .xpi there was an error. You can download the new files here: http://www.filehosting.cc/file/16190/minimizetotray-zip.html

I wonder where my mistake was. :)

michi Says:

I love the extension here, but I'm an Ubuntu user. Anyone know if something for Linux exists?

N8master Says:

yeah, I'm also an Ubuntu User and waiting for an extension like this one

ttyfscker Says:

You don't need an xpi extension for this, you should just install alltray. Follow the instructions to add the repo to your /etc/apt/sources.list in Ubuntu:

http://asher256-repository.tuxfamily.org/index.php?page=faq&...

Install alltray by doing:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install alltray

now to launch songbird edit your menu / desktop icon/ or whatever you use to launch songbird to look like :

alltray songbird

(instead of it just being songbird alone)

This comes in handy for several other apps as well, you can put anything you use in the tray with alltray :)

Dfects Says:

I just had to sign up and say thank you.

Theres only 2 things that were missing from songbird to avoid my annoyment and you forfilled both (minimize to tray and notifications).

Please, may I have your babies?

oiluj Says:

Like 'Dfects', I signed up just to congratulate and say thanks. Very nice and useful!

MikeJ Says:

when i download it, i get a .xpi file. what do i do with that?

Skwurl Says:

Advice for noobs, .xpi is the file extension for mozilla extensions, to open them, open the program you want to load them in, open the extension/addon manager and drag the file (or link) into the window, or if songbird is the target program, you can also simply open the link in songbird's browser, it will automatically install.

Skwurl.

I did a clean install for 0.2.5 today and it seems that this extension isn't properly recognized now. Any chance for a quick fix so I can minimize to task tray again?

Cheers!
