A portable Songbird

This is not what you think this is at all. I decided to fool around making portable applications and I said to my self what if I can make songbird portable. Well guess what I did. The Next release of songbird will be portable too but it will be modified and called another name as the gpl requires anyone to do for songbird. The files url is HERE I must say though this is a self-extracting file. There is no-virus and if you want to virus scan it all you want but.... Enjoy the application please.

please note this is only the windows version

No offense, but I think I'm going to wait for an official Portable Songbird. I just don't think it's ready to be portable yet.

MonkeyFit Says:

Also, I just tried downloading it from the link a couple times and it said the file was temporarily unavilable. But I've decided since making my original post, why not give it a shot. I guess the reasons for thinking it wasn't ready to be portable are the same as why it's not ready to replace my media player. Unfortunately, I can't try it right now. So, can you at least tell me if you editied the code to make it a true portable so that it creates your profile within the program folder? Also, can we run this version without writing anything such as a cache to the device itself. I would rather not waste write cycles running this program. Also, instead of wasting your time taking all the trademarked items out and calling it a different name, have you sent Pioneers of the Inevitable an email asking if you could temporarily license their trademarks for use in this version? Just some thoughts, I appreciate any answers.

thibeaz Says:

Well for your questions yes it creates a profile in your application directory that portable songbird is in and I don't know I was following a template and no I haven't sent an email to Pioneers of the unevitable. From sources at portableapps.com, John Haller is doing that. And I actually want to edit it my self. Might help learn through trial and error how to do it properly. tell me, what do you think of the name blackbird... Do you like that name. I don't think is taken so I am going to use that for my modified vesion

Blackbird sounds cool. I was finally able to download the app, but don't have time to play around with it until tomorrow. You should check out the way Nexuiz is set up and see if you can make a portable version that will work on all 3 major platforms. Nexuiz has a single archive you download containg the executables for all 3 platforms and I think they all just link to the same dll files and what not. Would be interesting to see it done that way, as it would make it truly portable.I'll post back in a couple days with my experiences. Thanks.

suite your self

mig Says:

Uhhhh....

Why do you want to fork our app? All you're doing is adding a batch file to use a local profile folder.

Besides, if you go take it to another machine it's not actually going to playback because the vlcrc settings won't be correct.

thibeaz Says:

well to answer you question mig it is not really a batch file it is a launcher made from my expirience using nsis. and as for the playback I had success using it on several computers as I exracted the installer using Universal Extracter and appropriated the launcher and it works out just fine

How about the name SongChick?

m1ke.tayl0r Says:

How about the name 'Songbird ME' as in, 'Songbird Migration Edition'!

longbow Says:

i vote for "nighthawk" or blackbird as MonkeyFit said

thibeaz Says:

wow it's still that popular, anyways I no longer have the time to work on it anymore (as well to compile a version that doesn't contain any TM'd images/logos

longbow Says:

will your version still work with regular themes?
cuase i'm working on (between my many hours at school) a theme similar to that of the porable apps site

i figured that would be cool, if we ever get a full .paf version of it, to have a matching theme.

thibeaz Says:

Well the version there not so much the new ones me thinks, but as I mentioned I really don't have the time to rework the entire program source to compile a version that doesn't have Songbird's tm

mig Says:

Note that you can follow these same instructions for normal Firefox with normal Songbird. You don't have to make a special distro for it to work:

Sweet! this is great or should i say tweet tweet!

Drum guy Says:

I like SongChick.

Or FlightBird?

rmccue Says:

I've taken over development for this officially at PortableApps.com (we have permission from POTI to use the trademarks and default feathers).
Hopefully, we should have it out soon :-)
