SongBird.(ing) from remote locations?

Hello there, Great idea, very interesting. One question on future direction: Will it be possible in the future to use SongBird to play my MP3 collection from anywhere on the internet? This woul be a real plus compare to already existing local players software... Keep going, nice work! Sabamimi

Songbird includes a link to Streampad under Network Services which allows you to listen to your mp3's streamed from home. It is not perfect though. Right now, it just links to the normal Streampad.com player page which has a Flash player. Your music will play through this Flash player. When Songbird's API gets released, I will make a special page that plays the music through Songbird. I don't even really need the full API. All I really need to know is how to play a song and append songs to the current playlist through javascript. The other issue is that you need to install the Streampad Home Server to stream your files. In the future, I would like to make an extension for Songbird which handles this as well. Dan

Actually, you need to know how to make your own playlist and tell the player to play it. It's totally possible to do, today, as a "chrome://" url (a local page with no XPCOM security restrictions), but it may take some time to get playlisting and such punched through the security that mozilla (quite rightly) places around remote web pages. It's also totally possible to do this, today, as a Device API category, such that you don't need to do any primary UI and your playlists just look like any other local or device playlists. We're trying to blur the line between "my ipod" and "that web service" for what it means to be a "songbird-aware" device. Anyhow, send me an email (or have your boss send my boss an email) and we'll splainitall.
