HOWTO: Join the Top 40 Effort

Itching to join in and start porting? Awesome. Porting add-ons can be as simple as two changes to the extension's chrome.manifest & install.rdf files (for simple extensions without much UI). Obviously, some more work is involved for more complicated extensions - but fear not, the Songbird team is around to help.

Here's how to get started.

Steps:

  1. Pick an extension, any extension... pick your own, pick somebody else's... it doesn't matter. We have a mix of Firefox developers porting their own, and community members kicking in to port as-yet unclaimed ones.
  2. Email stevel (stevel at songbirdnest dot com), and let him know which extension(s) you want to work on. He'll take care of updating the table and all that
  3. Start hacking on the extension! Check out some of our developer resources here:

And don't forget our Developer Forums, and you should totally drop by our IRC channel on irc.mozilla.org, #songbird and say hi. If you get stuck, need some help, or just wanna chat - we're always on the forums & channel.

  4. Test test test! If you want some help getting users to test, drop stevel a note, and he'll round up some willing guinea pigs
  5. All finished? Upload your extension to our Add-ons Site, and let stevel know. He'll update the table accordingly.
  6. Got any questions? Comments? Anything at all? Feel free to ping stevel at anytime by email, forums, or IRC.
